When we are feeding our body a poor diet, our skin is likely to show it. The skin often shows it when we are having internal troubles. If your face is looking a little sallow and could use a little treat you might want to try a homemade facial mask!

“Sallow skin” is dull looking skin and it happens to everyone at some point. When your skin lacks luster and shine you know it’s not looking it’s best. To get that healthy looking skin back you often need to change something internally to help return that healthy glow.

One of the ways you can help return that healthy glow is to use a Homemade Facial Mask. I’m not talking about just any mask – I am talking about fruit facial masks that anyone can create right in your kitchen if you have the right foods. A fruit mask will only work when you are eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. It can help you fix the problem, but it is not something that will cover up an unhealthy lifestyle! Exercise is especially helpful because it will increase oxygen consumption and helps your body use up the nutrients.

Why Make a Natural Homemade Facial Mask?

When it comes to pampering our skin, the treatment may be right in the kitchen! There are lots of natural ingredients that you can use to help nourish your skin without any harsh chemicals. Before there was a Walmart or any name brand skincare lines, early Americans had to learn all about natural remedies, and that includes natural skincare and a good homemade facial mask!

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Your skin needs certain minerals and vitamins to keep it functioning and doing it’s job – which is protecting your body. Skin can be flaky, oily, dry, or a combination. If you are not feeding your skin the things it needs you may see blemishes or blotchiness. It’s also important to note that anything we put on our skin is absorbed and ends up inside our bodies. Because of this, we need to make sure we are using safe and natural products on our skin.

If your skin isn’t looking it’s best because you aren’t taking care of it these masks can work to remove oils, remove dead skin cells, and help your skin retain moisture. This will help your healthy skin shine through.

Ingredients You Should Avoid

While there are lots of safe and natural ingredients we can find in our kitchen, we also need to remember that some things are not safe for our skin. This is especially important for someone who may have sensitive skin, blemish prone skin, or open sores on their face.

Lemons or limes can actually cause chemical burns, even though you wouldn’t expect it from a fruit. This is especially true in the summer time. If you have ever juiced lemons and then gone out in the sun, you know what I mean. The chemical burns that result in juicing lemons and then going in the sun can be brutal.

Hydrogen peroxide is another thing you should avoid putting on your face. The peroxide can break down skin cells, so it should definitely be avoided.

Egg whites are popular ingredients in a homemade facial mask, but there is also the potential that the egg whites contain salmonella. Of course, you won’t get salmonella from just putting it on your face, but there is the possibility of accidentally ingesting it. If you use egg whites in face masks, be extra careful please!

Ingredients for an Easy Homemade Facial Mask

While there are a lot of different items you can use in your kitchen for a quick homemade facial mask, here are a few things you may have on hand, and their benefits.

  • Strawberries – Strawberries are full of antioxidants which are¬†excellent for your skin. The seeds will also act as an exfoliant, gently helping to remove dead skin cells.
  • Oatmeal – Oatmeal acts as an excellent filler to hold masks together. Oatmeal will also help absorb excess oil and soften your skin. Look for finely ground powder instead of rolled oats.
  • Bananas – Bananas will help your skin retain moisture.
  • Grapes – Another antioxidant rich food! Grapes will help tone and tighten your skin.
  • Cucumbers – Cucumbers will help reduce puffiness and swelling while soothing and cooling skin. Keep a couple slices around to place on your eyes!

Not the DIY Type?

If you aren’t the DIY type or putting raw fruits and veggies on your face weirds you out, you can still find lots of natural facial masks to try. You can check out your local farmers market and support a small business who specializes in skincare, or you could do a quick search on etsy, or you could even check out Amazon. There are still some ‘big businesses’ that are focusing on natural skincare.

If you do decide that you want to go for more natural skincare items, a Homemade Facial Mask is a great way to start. However, don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by all the different options! Especially if you choose to buy a mask instead of making one.

Take a few minutes to do some research on a brand before you buy. You can also check out the different options for face masks and pick one that is better suited for your skin, whether its dry, oily, combination, or blemish prone, there are tons of options available, and you can certainly find more natural options when you are hunting for you skincare products.

If you want my opinion, start with a couple of the ingredients for a Homemade Facial Mask that I have listed above. You can go wrong with those options!
